Talking Lands: the theatrical season of the co-produced events in Grottaglie
The show “Life, death and miracles of S. Nicholas the greatest”, written, directed and interpreted by Paolo Panaro

On the 27th May, after playing the performance in Monopoli (on last 25th) and Fasano (26/5), the play will be repeated in Grottaglie; the third event of the theatrical season of the co-produced events in Grottaglie.

The event is scheduled within the project financed by European funds: “Talking Lands: talks between the lands of Apulia and Greece” which partners are: the Municipality of Monopoli (Lead Partner), the Municipality of Fasano, the Municipality of Grottaglie, Apulian Public Theatre, the Region of Western Greece, the Region of Ionian Island, the Municipality of Parga. The enhancement aimed to the cultural exchange and experience between Italy and Greece is the aim of the project.

The show “Life, death and miracles of S. Nicholas the greatest”, written, directed and interpreted by Paolo Panaro is co-produced by Diaghilev srl  and the company Anaptyksis Meletitikì.

Thanks to his experience of 20 years and more, Paolo Panaro focuses his researches in the field of the narrative theatre with the adaptation for the performance on the stage of many masterpieces that belong to different historical periods and many events from our traditions. Within “Talking Lands”, his researches focused on the translation of Saint Nicholas’s bones.

Saint Nicholas from Myra, is one of the most venerated Saints of the Christianity. Thanks to his life, represents an inspiring example for people who mean religion as an instrument to fight against injustice and human cruelty. Saint Nicholas is a Protector for lots of social categories and different types of work categories. He is one of the fewest Saints adored by Christian and Orthodox Churches. The tale of his life is presented within its historical background: a Mediterranean area that was still rather pagan; an Empire divided by Rome and Bysantium; the growing cruelty of Christians against the old religions; the decline of an oldest world in favour of a Judaic- Christian point of view on existence. But the bigger miracle is certainly the odd translation of the bones from Myra to Apulia. Bari, a town opened to Jewish people, to Muslims, to people from the North of Europe, to people from the south of the Mediterranean, will build on his miraculous relics, one of the biggest and most famous Church of the Medieval Age.
“ The first co-produced Apulian- Greek theatrical event in our town that opens the season of the original plays performed by theatrical companies from Monopoli, Fasano and Grottaglie in collaboration with many other Greek theatrical companies. Myths, legends, historical events and contemporary events will be performed aimed to a dynamic and mutual cultural exchange” said the Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Grottaglie. Admission is free. At Teatro Monticello, on May 27th h. 8.30 p.m.
