    The Region of Western Greece occupies the northwestern part of Peloponnese and the western border of mainland Greece consisting the western gate of Greece to Europe. It includes the regional units of Aitoloakarnania, Achaia and Ilia and covers 15.490 km², approximately 8.6% of the total area of ​​the country. It consists of 19 municipalities and its population reaches the 680,190 inhabitants.
    Its capital is the city of Patras, the third largest in Greece and one of the largest commercial and cultural centers of the country.
    Western Greece Region can be reached by car, boat or even airplane.
    It is a place of rare and unique beauty. The most part of it’s territory is mountainous or hilly, while extensive lowland parts complement the natural environment. On the western side there are plenty of sheltered bays and natural harbors, miles of unique natural beauty, unspoiled sandy and rocky shores which are washed by the Ionian Sea and the Gulfs Amvrakikos, Patraikos and Corinthiakos.
    The R.W.G has a long history dating back to ancient times and has managed to stand out for its rich cultural, political and sport’s tradition. It is homeland of many prominent politicians, artists, athletes, cultural events and commercial activities.
    It can be proud of being the mother of Olympic Spirit since Ancient Olympia, where the first Olympic Games took place and among the most worth seeing sites in the world, lies on the Region’s territory .
    Across the region there are scattered historical, cultural and natural prestigious monuments, archaeological sites, museums, monasteries, temples and modern achievements such as Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge and also world famous cultural events such as the Carnival of Patras.
    Partner’s Role:
    The self-government institution of the Region of Western Greece is responsible for the management of primary production, natural resources and industry affairs and regulates several transport, health, education and tourism issues.
    Its Strategic Plan for the region is further supported by a scheme of organizations and enterprises which design, manage and implement developmental, cultural and other European co-funded programs.
